PICA axes performance program

Posted on August 18, 2010 by

lala (live art list australia) was sad to hear today that PICA (Perth Institute of Contemporary Art) has decided to axe its performance program for two years.

There is a press article here.

Throughout its recent history PICA has continually punched above its weight on the national scene, supporting and initiating contemporary performance programs of significance.

PICA was instrumental in the creation of Mobile States touring network and was a founding partner of the extraordinarily influential Time_Place_Space series of art labs. In addition to this they have a member of a dance touring network between Dancehouse in Melbourne and Osaka Dance Box. These are but a few of the multitude of national tours of contemporary works that have happened at PICA. It is extraordinary that so much has happened in a city that is so far away from the largest cities on the eastern seaboard.

The exact details of this move are beyond lala and it would be great if someone from the West could enlighten us about why this has happened.

In the meantime if you or someone you know has benifited from PICA and their programs then please sign this petition.
